How to Design Your Remarkable Life

I am so excited to share this with you. This has to be one of the most important blog posts I have written. Trust me, this will change you life forever.

In order to have a life you truly desire, you need to design that life first. And this is what this blog post is all about. I will show you exactly how to do that. You will need a notebook and a pen.

Yesterday, I listened to a podcast on The Tim Ferris Show, where he interviewed Debbie Millman; one of the most influential designers working today. She mentioned that she has been doing this exercise with her students for a very long time, and it has helped them create magical lives - lives they truly desired. I took out my notebook and did the exercise myself, I can see now how this can make a difference in our life and how this can move us in the right direction. So here’s what Debbie said - take out a notebook and a pen, and follow this:

Let’s say it’s summer 2029 (10 years from now).

“What does your life look like? What are you doing? Where are you living? Who are you living with? Do you have pets? What kind of house do you live in? Is it an apartment? Are you in a city? Or in the country? What does your furniture look like? What kind of clothes do you wear? What kind of hair do you have?

Tell me about your pets. Tell me about your significant other. Who are they? Do you have children? Do you have a car? Do you have a boat? Talk about your career. What do you want? What are you reading? What are your making? What excites you? What is your health like?

And write this one day - 10 years from now.

This one day in the summer of 2029. What does your whole day look like? Start from the minute you wake up, brush your teeth, have your coffee or tea, all the way through to till you tuck yourself in bed at night. What is that day like for you?

Dream BIG.

Dream without any fear. Write it all down. You don’t have to share it with anyone, other than yourself. Put your whole heart into it. And write like there’s no tomorrow. Like your life depends on it, because it does.

And then read it once a year. See what happens. It is magic!”

When I sat down to write the 10-year plan for my remarkable life, it made me think hard about what I really wanted. When I wrote down some things that I thought I had wanted, it didn’t feel right and that is what opened my eyes, it made me realize that there was something else that mattered more to me. This is a wonderful exercise. I wrote mine in detail so I filled up around 10 pages. I know a friend who wrote hers in one page. So it doesn’t really matter what the length is, what matters most is to be clear about what you really want and does it make you feel happy inside when you read it.
